Firstly let's talk about what they are... Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts which are good for your digestive system. Most of us associate bacteria being bad for us. The bacteria in probiotics are also know as "good" bacteria. That are particularly helpful to our digestive system.
Researchers are still trying to find out how exactly probiotics actually work. Some ways include:
Types of Probiotics
Lactobacillus. The most common of the probiotics. Found in yogurt and fermented foods. Suggested for people that find lactose foods difficult to digest. May also help with diarrhea,.
Bifidobacterium. May help with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). This probiotic can be found in some dairy products.
accharomyces boulardii is a yeast found in probiotics. It appears to help fight diarrhea and other digestive problems.
How can probiotics help you?
Benefits of probiotics don't just stop at the digestive system though. They've also been known to help treat other problems like oral health, allergies, cold and vaginal health
You can even give your "good" bacteria a boost with some prebiotics.Foods like asparagus, leeks, garlic and onions . Inulin is also a great prebiotic.
